Pownall’s practice explores the lived experience of inhabiting a nonconforming body, navigating the nuanced landscapes of visibility, vulnerability, and difference. As an artist living with disability and chronic illness, her work is rooted in acts of healing, an attentive return to thoughts and emotions often silenced or suppressed.
Informed by her background in counselling, her process becomes a form of gentle excavation, revealing the subtle interconnections between mind, body, and soul. The influence of her upbringing by the sea, surrounded by the quiet rhythms of the countryside, infuses her work with a sense of stillness and reflection, echoing the restorative possibilities of the natural world. Through this practice, Pownall seeks to hold space for what is often unseen, cultivating community, empathy, and a deeper understanding of these intimate, hidden realities.
